The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC/Accreditation Association) was established in 1979 to advance and promote patient safety, quality of care and measurement of performance. A private, non-profit entity, the AAAHC has developed a solid reputation as an advocate of high quality health care and has become the leader in ambulatory health care accreditation.

Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization which objectively evaluates and accredits ambulatory care organizations since 1975. There are over 1,600 JCAHO-accredited organizations nationally, including ambulatory surgery centers and office-based surgery practices. ASCs represent near 50% of all Joint Commission accredited ambulatory organizations, and is a major area of focus for its accreditation program. Joint Commission also offers ASCs a "deemed status" survey to meet the Conditions for Coverage for the Medicare program.
